  • L'évier: Used specifically for the kitchen sink (where you wash dishes or prepare food).
  • Le lavabo: Used specifically for the bathroom sink (where you wash your hands or brush your teeth).
  • Confusing the two sounds unnatural to native speakers, so remember: évier in the kitchen, lavabo in the bathroom.

Floor numbering in France and francophone Europe differs from standard American English usage:

  • Le rez-de-chaussée (RDC): The ground floor (1st floor in the US).
  • Le premier étage: The floor above the ground floor (2nd floor in the US).
  • Le sous-sol: The basement or underground level.
