Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about German kitchen vocabulary, expressions, and culture.

When referring to primary kitchen appliances, remember that most take masculine or feminine articles:

  • der Herd (stove) and der Ofen or der Backofen (oven)
  • der Kühlschrank (refrigerator) and der Gefrierschrank (freezer)
  • die Mikrowelle (microwave) and die Spülmaschine (dishwasher)
  • To say you put something inside an appliance, use in den... (masculine) or in die... (feminine), for example: Ich stelle die Milch in den Kühlschrank.

Here are the most common verbs you will encounter when following a German recipe or preparing food:

  • kochen – to cook or boil (e.g., Wasser kochen)
  • backen – to bake (used for bread, cakes, or oven dishes)
  • braten – to fry or sear in a pan
  • schneiden – to cut or chop
  • rühren – to stir or mix with a spoon or whisk

The collective term for cutlery is das Besteck, which includes basic eating utensils:

  • der Löffel (spoon) – including der Esslöffel (tablespoon) and der Teelöffel (teaspoon)
  • die Gabel (fork)
  • das Messer (knife)
  • To ask for cutlery, you can say: Könnte ich bitte ein Besteck haben? (Could I please have cutlery?)

Yes, everyday kitchen items often have distinct names depending on whether you are in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland:

  • A pot is called der Topf in Germany, but often das Reindl or der Häfeln in parts of Austria.
  • A trash bin is der Mülleimer in Germany, der Mistkübel in Austria, and der Abfalleimer in Switzerland.
  • A kitchen towel is das Küchentuch or das Geschirrtuch in Germany, but often called das Abziehtuch or das Abwashlumpe in regional Swiss German.

German recipes rely heavily on metric weight rather than cup volumes, but short forms are common:

  • EL stands for Esslöffel (tablespoon, approx. 15 ml).
  • TL stands for Teelöffel (teaspoon, approx. 5 ml).
  • Prise means a pinch (e.g., eine Prise Salz).
  • Instead of cups, recipes specify grams (g) or milliliters (ml), making a Küchenwaage (kitchen scale) indispensable.
