Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about German numbers and counting

In German, compound numbers from 21 to 99 are formed by stating the ones digit first, followed by und (and), and then the tens digit, written as a single word.

  • 21 is einundzwanzig (literally 'one-and-twenty').
  • 35 is fünfunddreißig (literally 'five-and-thirty').
  • Notice that eins drops its final 's' and becomes ein- when joined with und.

German uses the long scale numerical system, which differs significantly from modern English counting terms:

  • eine Million = 1,000,000 (one million)
  • eine Milliarde = 1,000,000,000 (one billion in English)
  • eine Billion = 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion in English)

When speaking aloud over the telephone or in noisy environments, Germans often use an alternative pronunciation for 'two':

  • The word zwei can easily be misheard as drei (three) over audio calls.
  • To ensure clarity, native speakers often say zwo instead of zwei.
  • Example: 'Meine Telefonnummer ist null-zwo-eins...' (My phone number is zero-two-one...)

Capitalization rules depend on whether the number is used as a cardinal counting word or as a noun:

  • Standard counting numbers written as words are lowercase: drei, zwanzig, hundert.
  • Large quantitative nouns like die Million and die Milliarde are always capitalized nouns.
  • Specific nominalized numbers take capital letters: die Eins (the number one / top grade).

Here are common German verbs for mathematics, counting, and prices:

  • zählen – to count
  • rechnen – to calculate / do math
  • kosten – to cost
  • addieren / subtrahieren – to add / to subtract
