Frequently Asked Questions

Master key prepositions, regional variations, and useful German compound words for public and private transport.

Depending on the vehicle, German uses distinct verbs to describe how you get from one place to another:

  • fahren: Used for ground transportation where you are a passenger or driver (e.g., mit dem Bus fahren, Auto fahren).
  • fliegen: Used exclusively for airborne transport (e.g., mit dem Flugzeug fliegen).
  • reisen: Used for general long-distance travel regardless of vehicle (e.g., durch Europa reisen).
  • reiten: Used specifically for riding animals like horses.

German relies primarily on two prepositions when talking about vehicles and stations:

  • mit + Dative: Use this to specify the mode of transit (e.g., mit dem Zug, mit der U-Bahn, mit dem Fahrrad).
  • in / an / auf + Case: Use in for sitting inside closed vehicles (im Auto sitzen), an for stations (am Bahnhof sein), and auf for open vehicles or platforms (auf dem Fahrrad, auf dem Bahnsteig).

These words all mean a pass or ticket, but they are used in different contexts:

  • die Fahrkarte: Traditional term for bus, tram, or train tickets within local or regional transport.
  • das Ticket: Modern loanword commonly used for plane tickets, online train reservations, or events.
  • die Bordkarte: Specifically refers to an airline or cruise ship boarding pass given after check-in.

While standard German is widely understood, several regional nouns for transportation are everyday standard vocabulary in Austria and Switzerland:

  • Bicycle: das Fahrrad in Germany, often das Radl in Austria, and strictly das Velo in Switzerland.
  • Tram / Streetcar: die Straßenbahn in Germany, colloquially die Bim in Austria, and das Tram in Switzerland.
  • Motorcycle: das Motorrad across Germany/Austria, but der Töff in Switzerland.

German frequently combines nouns to create precise compound words for traffic and driving:

  • der Kreisverkehr: Traffic circle / roundabout (from Kreis = circle + Verkehr = traffic).
  • der Zebrastreifen: Pedestrian crosswalk (literally 'zebra stripe').
  • die Windschutzscheibe: Windshield (literally 'wind protection pane').
  • der Sicherheitsgurt: Seatbelt (literally 'safety belt').
