Memory Hooks & Tricks

Boost your vocabulary retention with these clever, association-rich memory tricks tailored for German learners.

der Knoblauch (garlic)

Memory Trick: Imagine knocking on a wooden door before entering a room full of pungent garlic. KNOB-lauch sounds like turning a KNOB on a garlic-scented door.

Turn the KNOB to enter the garlic kitchen!

die Zwiebel (onion)

Memory Trick: Think of peeling an onion layer by layer. The prefix zwei- means 'two' or 'double', reflecting the twin-like nested layers inside a single onion.

Layer one and layer TWO make a Zwiebel!

der Blumenkohl (cauliflower)

Memory Trick: Blumen means 'flowers' and Kohl means 'cabbage'. Cauliflower literally looks like a giant white head of cabbage flowers!

A flower cabbage is a Blumenkohl!

die Erbse (pea)

Memory Trick: Think of HERBS planted in tiny green pods. An Erbse sounds like 'herb', but it's a small round green pea.

Fresh green HERBS growing next to tiny green Erbsen!

der Kürbis (pumpkin)

Memory Trick: Imagine a round pumpkin rolling down a CURB in autumn. Kürbis sounds like 'curb-is'.

That big pumpkin is sitting on the CURB!

die Aubergine (eggplant)

Memory Trick: In British English and French, an eggplant is called an aubergine. German borrows this exact French loanword for eggplant.

Deep purple aubergine is the European word for eggplant!
