Frequently Asked Questions

Master key terms, nuances, and regional differences for navigating professional German work environments.

While both terms refer to compensation for work, German makes a distinct administrative and historical difference:

  • Das Gehalt: A fixed monthly salary paid to office workers, managers, and salaried staff (Angestellte), regardless of exact hours worked.
  • Der Lohn: Hourly wages typically paid to manual workers, temporary staff, or tradespeople (Arbeiter), which fluctuate based on hours worked.
  • In modern usage, Gehalt is the standard term used in most corporate and office job ads.

Germany has very specific terms for different types of leave from work:

  • Der Urlaub: Vacation time or official paid annual leave.
  • Der Krankenstand: The state of being on official sick leave.
  • Die Krankmeldung / Der Krankenschein: The medical certificate (doctor's note) submitted to the employer when taking sick days.
  • To say 'I am taking a day off', you say: Ich nehme mir einen Tag frei.

When applying for jobs in German-speaking countries, these two documents form part of the application package (die Bewerbungsunterlagen):

  • Die Bewerbung: The overall job application process or the cover letter package itself.
  • Der Lebenslauf: The CV / resume detailing your education and work experience (literally 'life course').
  • Note that German resumes traditionally include a professional photo and personal details.

Modern work models use a mix of native German terms and borrowed terms:

  • Die Telearbeit / Das Homeoffice: Working from home. In daily German conversation, das Homeoffice is used far more frequently than die Telearbeit.
  • Gleitzeit: Flextime, allowing employees to choose when they start and finish work within a core window.
  • Vollzeit / Teilzeit: Full-time versus part-time employment.

Yes, vocational training (die Ausbildung) is very prominent, but the terminology varies across German-speaking regions:

  • Germany: Der Auszubildende (often shortened to Azubi) is the official standard term.
  • Austria: Der Lehrling is the most common and standard term for an apprentice.
  • Switzerland: Der Lehrling or informally der Stift is widely used.
