Memory Hooks & Tricks

Boost your vocabulary retention with these clever, association-rich memory tricks tailored for Italian learners.

il divano (sofa)

Memory Trick: Picture a dramatic diva lounging on the sofa and refusing to get up: 'Diva? No! I am staying on this sofa!'

The diva says no to leaving the divano!

l'asciugamano (towel)

Memory Trick: Combines asciugare (to dry) and mano (hand). A towel is literally something that dries your hand.

Dry your mano with an asciugamano!

lo specchio (mirror)

Memory Trick: When you look into the mirror, you examine your face for a tiny dirt speck.

Check for a tiny speck in lo specchio!

il cuscino (pillow)

Memory Trick: It sounds very similar to the English word cushion. You lay your head on a soft pillow or cushion.

A cuscino is as cozy as a soft cushion!

il cacciavite (screwdriver)

Memory Trick: Literal compound: caccia (hunts/drives out) + vite (screw). It is the tool that drives screws.

Use a cacciavite to turn every vite!

lo zerbino (doormat)

Memory Trick: Picture a tiny zebra curled up lying flat outside your front door acting as a welcome mat.

Wipe your feet on the zerbino before coming in!
